Durante una
rappresentazione della Martha di Friedrich von Flotow al Teatro dell'Opera di Parigi, il direttore d'orchestra
Villeneuve nota alcune discordanze tra gli archi e ne individua la 

causa nel primo violino, Erique
Claudin.
Terminato lo spettacolo Claudin viene convocato nell'ufficio del maestro, che gli chiede di suonare.
Claudin improvvisa una vecchia ninna-nanna della Provenza, sua terra natale, eseguendola 

in modo perfetto.
Ma alla richiesta di accennare all'entrata dei violini nel terzo atto della Marta, il violinista rifiuta, affermando di
non riuscire più ad utilizzare al meglio la mano 

sinistra. Villeneuve, pur molto dispiaciuto è
costretto a licenziarlo dall'orchestra dell'Opera................

Claudin hopelessly loves rising operatic soprano Christine Dubois (as do baritone Anatole and police inspector Raoul)
and secretly aids her career. But Claudin loses both his 

touch and his job, murders a rascally music
publisher in a fit of madness, and has his face etched with acid. Soon, mysterious crimes plague the Paris Opera House,
blamed on a legendary 

"phantom" whom none can find in the mazes and catacombs. But both of Christine's
lovers have plans to ferret him out.
